How this is worked out
- Losses are deducted from gains, then the £3,000 annual exempt amount.
- Your gains sit on top of your taxable income. Whatever fits in your unused basic-rate band (£37,700 above your Personal Allowance) is taxed at 18%; the rest at 24%.
- The £12,570 Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income over £100,000.
- Gross pension contributions paid from net pay, and Gift Aid donations, extend your basic-rate band.
This is an estimate for UK-resident individuals. It does not cover Business Asset Disposal Relief, Investors’ Relief, trusts or the 60-day reporting rule for UK property. Gains inside an ISA or pension are not taxed. Sources: GOV.UK: Capital Gains Tax rates, GOV.UK: rates and allowances. Not personal tax advice.
